Self-Storage REIT Extra Space to Trial Onity Passport Smart-Lock Solution
April 12, 2023
Self-storage real estate investment trust (REIT) Extra Space Storage Inc. has agreed to integrate DirectKey technology from Onity, a provider of electronic-access products and mobile credentials for self-storage and other industries, into some of its properties. The integration will link the Extra Space customer mobile app with Onity’s Passport smart-lock solution on a trial basis, according to a press release.
Released in March, Passport includes a smart lock, cloud-based management system, Internet of Things network and connections to other approved devices. It was developed with feedback from Extra Space and others within the self-storage sector, the release stated.
“Extra Space is actively integrating Onity’s DirectKey technology into our customer mobile app and testing the Passport lock at a number of our properties,” said James Hafen, vice president of product for Extra Space. “We are proud to partner with a proven access-control leader in the hospitality and real estate industries to create the best experience possible for our customers. Having a new option in digital locks will drive innovation for the self-storage industry, and we’re excited to see new vendors like Onity taking an interest in self-storage.”
“The relationship with Extra Space has been essential in the development of our Passport locking solution,” said Andre Lalande, vice president of sales for Onity. “We are honored to work together to better the self-storage industry.”
Onity will conduct demonstrations of the new product this week during the Inside Self-Storage World Expo in Las Vegas, according to the release.
Founded in 1986, Onity also serves the commercial, education, hospitality and military industries. It’s part of Carrier Global Corp., a provider of healthy, safe, sustainable and intelligent building and cold-chain solutions.
Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Extra Space owns or operates more than 2,338 self-storage properties nationwide and in Puerto Rico. The company’s properties comprise approximately 1.6 million units and 176.1 million square feet of rentable space.
