Mamaroneck Self Storage (MSS) hosted a gathering on March 23 for the Westchester County-Hudson Valley Chapter of the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) at its facility in Mamaroneck, N.Y. The event at 426 Waverly Ave. included a panel discussion about the design and construction of MSS and how the owners met the energy-efficiency and sustainability standards of The New York State Energy Research Development Agency’s New Construction Program. The panel included:

  • Mike Flatley, senior engineer of Steven Winter Associates, which provided energy consultation during the facility’s development

  • Mick Gilbert, business development manager for the Consolidated Edison Inc., the property’s electricity supplier

  • Larry Thiel, commercial sales manager for Daikin AC, which provided the property’s heating, venting and air-conditioning equipment

  • Chris Murphy, president of Murphy Brothers Contracting, the facility’s builder, owner and operator

“It was a terrific opportunity to showcase our self-storage facility building, emphasizing the green construction (energy-saving) features, as well as an opportunity to encourage facility managers to ‘think green’ when it come times to upgrades and improvements to their own buildings and take full advantage of energy-program incentives,” said Michael Murphy, head of new project development at Murphy Brothers.

Opened in October, Mamaroneck Self Storage features numerous green initiatives, including DOW Powerhouse Solar Shingles, which are a combination of roof shingles and a solar-panel system. The 40,000-square-foot facility also includes heat-recovery ventilators, a high-efficiency variable refrigerant flow cooling and heating system, and energy-efficient windows.

Since opening, the company has hosted several community events, including workshops for homeowners. The four-part series was designed to help residents become more environmentally responsible and make their homes more energy-efficient.

Founded in 1979 and headquartered in Mamaroneck, Murphy Brothers Contracting constructs and renovates custom homes and builds commercial projects in the Westchester Hudson Valley region and Fairfield County. It also owns Murphy Brothers Millworks.
