Self-Storage REIT Public Storage Promotes Top Lawyer

Public Storage Inc., a publicly traded self-storage real estate investment trust and third-party management firm, has promoted Nathaniel Vitan to senior vice president, chief legal officer and corporate secretary, effective April 20. Vitan joined the company in June 2016 as vice president and chief legal counsel for litigation and operations, according to a press release. He was formerly assistant general counsel for Altria Client Services Inc. He also served as a trial practice and appellate litigation attorney at Latham & Watkins LLP.

Vitan succeeds Lily Y. Hughes, who resigned to pursue a chief legal officer position at another company that’s geographically closer to her family. Hughes joined Public Storage in 2015. She’ll depart the company on May 31 following the completion of the transition.

“Lily has been an outstanding partner, and we are grateful for her integrity and leadership and the many contributions she brought to Public Storage,” said Joe Russell, CEO and president. “The Public Storage team is keenly focused on succession planning across the company, and we are excited to welcome Nathan to his new role. His multi-faceted experience, proven abilities and impeccable character make him well-suited for the position. Based in Glendale, Calif., Public Storage has interests in 2,429 self-storage facilities in 38 states, with approximately 162 million net rentable square feet. Operating under the Shurgard brand name, the company also has 232 facilities in seven European countries, with approximately 13 million net rentable square feet.
