Self-Storage REIT Life Storage Receives National Recognition for Company Culture, Sustainability
February 18, 2022
Life Storage Inc., a self-storage real estate investment trust (REIT) and management company, was named on the 2022 list of “America’s Best Midsize Employers” by “Forbes” magazine and data-research firm Statista. It also received recognition for its sustainability practices by Sustainalytics, a company affiliate of financial services firm Morningstar Inc.
“These accomplishments are a direct result of our team’s sustainability efforts and the overall employee experience,” said Life Storage CEO Joe Saffire. “At Life Storage, we believe that the best way to conduct business is to do the right thing—by the environment, by our commitment to ethical and transparent business practices, and most importantly, by our employees. It’s very rewarding to see these efforts recognized in this way.”
“Forbes” partnered with Statista to identify companies liked best by employees for its annual ranking, which is divided into two lists. One highlights the top 500 large companies with more than 5,000 U.S. employees, while the other showcases the top 500 mid-size companies with 1,000 to 5,000 workers. More than 60,000 Americans were surveyed. Participants were asked to give their opinions on topics including work conditions, pay, professional development and company image.
Life Storage ranked No. 484. It has 2,078 employees, according to the list. The REIT was placed in the “Transportation and Logistics” industrial category.
Sustainalytics included Life Storage in its annual ESG (environmental, social and governance) Top-Rated Companies list, giving it regional (Canada and the United States) recognition. It placed Life Storage at 196 out of 1,038 real estate firms in its ESG Risk Rating rankings, with a low-risk score of 14.1. Companies that score 0 to 10 are considered to have negligible risk, while those in the 10 to 20 range are low-risk. The scale also includes 20 to 30 for medium risk, 30 to 40 for high risk and 40-plus for severe risk.
In addition, Saffire joined more than 2,000 CEOs in signing the CEO Action Pledge for Diversity & Inclusion, which includes a commitment to several corporate goals designed to create a diverse and inclusive work environment. “CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion is the largest CEO-driven business commitment to drive measurable action and meaningful change in advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace,” according to the coalition.
Life Storage published its first sustainability report in November, which offers insight to its environmental, social and governance efforts.
Based in Buffalo, N.Y., Life Storage operates more than 1,100 self-storage facilities in 35 states. Its portfolio of owned and managed facilities comprises more than 74 million square feet.
