Police Stand Off With Knife-Wielding Man at Oceanside, CA, Self-Storage Facility

A man armed with two large knives, a hatchet and a machete kept police at bay for five hours on Friday inside a hallway at an Oceanside, California, self-storage facility. He eventually surrendered and was taken into custody, according to sources.

Officers were called to Extra Space Storage at 4567 Oceanside Blvd. at 8 a.m. by an employee of the business. When they arrived, the man moved to a narrow hallway inside one of the storage buildings. Police blocked the area and evacuated part of the facility while encouraging the perpetrator to surrender.

During the stand-off, the 41-year-old occasionally put down the weapons, but picked them back up while shouting words incoherently. Officers fired pepper balls at him twice, but he still refused to comply with their demands. Following hours of negotiation, he finally submitted. No officers were injured.

The man faces charges of suspicion of brandishing a knife and resisting arrest, the sources reported.

Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Extra Space owns or operates more than 2,096 self-storage properties nationwide and in Puerto Rico. The company’s properties comprise approximately 1.5 million units and 160.9 million square feet of rentable space.
