2 Charged in Summersville, SC, Self-Storage Break-Ins

Two men have been arrested in connection with break-ins that occurred March 5 at a Summersville, South Carolina, self-storage facility. After capture, one of the suspects falsely claimed to be an undercover detective investigating a murder, according to the source.

Police responded to the property on Sangaree Park Court at 3:42 a.m. after someone called to report that an unknown vehicle drove past one of their security cameras. When the deputy arrived, he spotted a silver Chevrolet Equinox parked near the storage facility.

After entering the property, the officer discovered multiple self-storage units open and items scattered around them. The two suspects were nearby and ran when approached. The officer apprehended Antione McDaniel, 30, who was wearing a mask and gloves and carried a backpack. During a search, a cut lock was found in his pants pocket.

The second suspect, 48-year-old David Burton Clark Jr., fled the scene but was later captured by a K-9 police unit. Clark claimed he was working undercover for the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office and searching the units for a cell phone that “had evidence of a murder on it,” the source reported. He also told officers the burglaries were committed by McDaniel and another man named “Steve” or “Stevo.”

Officers later determined the vehicle was being used by McDaniel. He and Clark Jr. have been charged with 10 counts of second-degree burglary and one count each of criminal conspiracy, malicious injury to real property and possession of burglary tools. Both are being held at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center. The bond is $202,125 for Clark Jr., and $62,125 for McDaniel.
