Canadian Self-Storage Operators Support Charity for Women Fleeing Abuse

Abacus Self Storage and Doane Road Storage in Ontario, Canada, are supporting Shelter Movers, a national charity that provides free moving and storage services to women and children experiencing abuse. The self-storage operators provide free use of storage units to Shelter Movers and its clients, while Bristol assists with truck rentals and A.S.P. Security Services provides private security guards.

The volunteer-driven organization expanded its services this week to include York, Ontario. It’ll partner with Abuse Hurts and York Region Centre for Community Safety (YRCCS), plus local shelters Sandgate Women’s Shelter of York Region and Yellow Brick House. Shelter Movers also has chapters in Halifax, Ottawa and Vancouver.

“Local business owners in York region see the opportunity for ways they can give back and show compassion by proxy working through Shelter Movers,” said Marc Hull-Jacquin, founder and director of Shelter Movers, which has completed 1,100 moves since opening and helps an average of 60 families each month.

The moving and storage service fills a critical gap for people fleeing abuse, according to Lauren Massey, program coordinator for YRCCS. “One of the biggest things our clients are looking for is that ability to be able to move, and moving companies cost an astronomical amount to move someone, and a lot of them don’t have the funds for that,” she said.

Opened in 1999, Abacus Self Storage at 25 Colston Court in Richmond Hill serves the Ontario communities of Markham, North York, Thornhill and Vaughan.

Doane Road Storage is owned and operated by Paul Mayhew. The facility at 1825 Doane Road in Queensville opened more than 20 years ago.
