Camarillo, CA, City Council Passes 45-Day Moratorium on Self-Storage Applications

The Camarillo, California, City Council passed a 45-day moratorium on applications for new self-storage projects on Oct. 13 to give city staff time to “study the potential impacts of this development trend.” After receiving an uptick in inquiries from developers, officials decided to take a closer look at self-storage projects in relation to land occupancy and job creation, according to the source.

In a report to the council, community development director Joe Vacca described self-storage businesses as “job dead zones.” “We are concerned that if self-storage facilities proliferate, that would consume large amounts of the land zoned to accommodate job creation based on our economic development strategic plan,” Vacca said.

The city’s economic goals include the creation of more high-paying jobs through biotech, business-services, entertainment and advanced-manufacturing businesses, the source reported.

Camarillo has 10 self-storage facilities operating in the city. A 116,000-square-foot Trojan Storage facility was approved in January. Once complete, the business is expected to create up to three jobs, the source reported.
