MakeSpace Labs Inc., a startup business specializing in valet self-storage services in New York City, has expanded its delivery service nationwide. The company has offered door-to-door service for customers’ stored goods since it launched last year and is now collaborating with partners to offer property retrieval and delivery anywhere in the country. The service will enable customers traveling outside their local area to receive items at competitive rates, according to a press release.

MakeSpace creates a visual catalog of each storage box stored in its warehouse. Customers have access to the catalog through a cloud-based platform, which allows them to keep track of their items and request them when desired.

"Cloud storage for physical things has always been central to our idea of what MakeSpace should be, and with this new iteration, we're continuing to realize that vision," said Sam Rosen, founder and CEO. "Your stuff should be accessible in the same way your documents, music and photos are: on any device, in any location, at any time. It's all about accessibility."

MakeSpace charges a $29 flat rate for local delivery of items in New York City. The national return-shipping service starts at $20 per box, but for every month a box is stored, the company will drop the delivery fee $1 until it is free, company officials said.

"Your belongings are no longer tied to one location. We can get your stuff back to you wherever you are," Rosen said. "This new functionality is game-changing; it enables the mobility of things."

MakeSpace also plans to offer local storage and delivery services in other major metropolitan markets. It has raised $10.1 million in funding, including investments from actor Ashton Kutcher and NBA star Carmelo Anthony, according to the release. The company raised $8 million in venture capital in May.
