Phoenix-based U-Haul International Inc. is converting a former flooring store to self-storage in Irondequoit, N.Y. U-Haul Moving & Storage of West Irondequoit at 1106 E. Ridge Road currently offers moving and packing supplies, truck and trailer rentals, and U-Box portable-storage containers. Construction of a new showroom in the 60,000-square-foot building is nearly complete, and renovations are underway to add 570 climate-controlled storage units, according to a press release.
The three-story building that formerly housed Katz Floor Coverings and Carpet had been vacant for several years, the release stated. “The Town of Irondequoit was ecstatic with our refurbishing of what had become an eyesore in the community. The town is working with us and loves the planned renovations,” said Todd Schnitzer, president of the U-Haul Co. of Western New York.
Irondequoit, which is just north of Rochester, N.Y., has seen a resurgence of new businesses. “This area is really starting to grow quickly. It's exciting to be able to offer a state-of-the-art storage facility not previously seen in this community,” Schnitzer said.
The site is across from a Home Depot store and about a mile from U-Haul Moving & Storage of Ridge Road.
The opening of the Irondequoit property was driven by U-Haul’s corporate sustainability initiatives, which support infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint, the release stated. U-Haul’s adaptive reuse of existing structures eliminates the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps local cities diminish their unwanted inventory of unused buildings, U-Haul officials said.
Established in 1945, U-Haul has more than 44 million square feet of storage space at more than 1,200 owned facilities throughout North America.
