U-Haul Co. of Northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula has acquired the five-property Kevin's Self Storage portfolio in Michigan from owner/operators Kevin and Judy Moyle. The couple opened their first storage facility in Hougton, Mich., 18 years ago, and buildings were added over the years to meet demand, according to a U-Haul press release. The Moyles purchased property in Calumet, Dodgeville, Hancock and Lake Linden to add to their portfolio, which now consists of 19 storage buildings.

UHaul Moving and Storage of Houghton at 46705 State Highway M-26 will remotely operate the facilities. The four other properties are:

  • U-Haul Moving and Storage of Calumet/Laurium, 56667 Station Drive, Calumet

  • U-Haul Moving and Storage of Dodgeville, 46553 Main St., Dodgeville

  • U-Haul Moving and Storage of Hancock, 51000 N. U.S. 41, Hancock

  • U-Haul Moving and Storage of Lake Linden, 28171 9th St., Lake Linden

"Each of the five areas we now operate in Copper Country are tight-knit communities with a hometown feel," said Justin Kaminski, marketing company president. "U-Haul will continue to offer that small-town, family-oriented service."

U-Haul plans to add new storage buildings to each of the properties. It has also made property improvements such as video cameras, and a retail center that sells packing and moving supplies. Trucks, trailers and portable-storage containers can also be rented at the facilities.

The acquisition of Kevin's Self Storage was driven by U-Haul’s corporate sustainability initiatives, which support infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint, according to a company press release. U-Haul’s adaptive reuse of buildings eliminates the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps local cities diminish their unwanted inventory of unused buildings, U-Haul officials said.

Established in 1945, U-Haul International Inc. has more than 40 million square feet of storage space at more than 1,000 owned and managed facilities throughout North America.
