Men on the Move Moving & Self Storage and M.O.M. Realty LLC are facing opposition to the expansion they desire for their self-storage facility in Floral Park, N.Y. On the advice of the village attorney, the Floral Park Board of Trustees tabled the proposal on May 17 so members can further review a traffic study they received just before the meeting, according to the source.

The Men on the Move application seeks approval to add 54,273 square feet of floor space to the property at 50 Carnation Ave. The building’s footprint would be unchanged. Physical changes would include modifications to doors, support columns and landscaping, development planners said. “As far as the aesthetics, this building is going to look better than it ever did in 100 years,” John Beyer, president of Men on the Move, said during the meeting.

Residents expressed concerns about the validity of the traffic study, fearing the expansion would increase traffic flow. They also questioned how the intersection of Atlantic and Carnation Avenues—called “dangerous” by some residents—would be affected, the source reported. One resident asked if the expansion would be bring additional lighting to the area.

Traffic to the building would likely decrease because the company’s warehouse is being relocated to Port Washington, N.Y., according to engineers representing the developers. Thirty-nine trucks would be part of the relocation, said Wayne A. Muller, principal for RMS Engineering, a Huntington, N.Y., firm that does traffic studies for self-storage developers. Muller added that traffic from cars would be minimal due to the nature of self-storage use.

Founded in 1985, Men on the Move has a fleet of moving trucks and a second storage facility in Huntington, N.Y.

M.O.M. Realty was founded in 2006 and is based in Cooperstown, N.Y.
