Update 3/12/14 - The winner of SpareFoot’s “Battle of the Storage Bands” contest was Groove Think, a progressive rock-fusion band based in Austin, Texas. The band played a 30-minute set to open a SpareFoot party on March 7.
Although the trio typically practices in a garage, the members shot a video rehearsal of their original song “Lemnos” inside a self-storage unit specifically to enter the contest. The YouTube video was one of the top three vote-getters on SpareFoot’s Facebook contest page and was chosen by the company’s band-selection committee.
Groove Think is currently working on its third full-length album and is scheduled to perform two gigs this week during Austin’s prestigious South by Southwest, a festival of music, film and interactive technology.
Together for more than three years, the band cites Dream Theater, The Mars Volta, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Rush as influences.
1/17/14 - SpareFoot, an online marketplace for the self-storage industry, has launched a “Battle of the Storage Bands” contest through social media. Musical acts from the Austin, Texas, area that practice in local self-storage units are eligible to vie for a 30-minute gig on March 7, opening a company party at Austin’s historic Scoot Inn.
Acts can enter the contest by submitting a YouTube video performance of an original song to SpareFoot’s Facebook page. The video caption must include the name of the act, names of band members and the local storage facility used for practice. SpareFoot’s band-selection committee will consider the three submissions that collect the most online votes by Feb. 21, selecting one to perform live at the event. The winning act will also receive VIP party passes, event transportation and one night’s lodging.
