Door To Door Storage Inc., a national provider of portable self-storage containers and moving services, has partnered with the University of San Diego (USD) School of Business Administration to participate in a new Thanksgiving House project. This month, the organizations will renovate the home of 58-year-old Rosalie Cardenas, who inexplicably lost the use of her legs last year and is confined to a wheelchair.
USD students will make Rosalie's home more wheelchair accessible by lowering the kitchen countertops, installing ADA-compliant sinks, widening the doors as well as modifying and installing new access ramps and a roll-in shower. A number of aesthetic improvements will also be made. Work on the house will take place on Nov. 1, 2, 8 and 9.
The San Diego branch of Door To Door will donated the use and transportation of five portable-storage containers for Cardenas and her family during the renovation. The containers were delivered to the work site on Oct. 13 and will be removed upon project completion.
The mission of Thanksgiving House is to improve the quality of life for deserving citizens of Linda Vista, Calif., by refurbishing their homes at no cost. All work is completed by students enrolled in USD’s Project Management Course, which is offered every fall semester. The effort gives students the opportunity to learn and apply the tools and techniques of project management while providing community service. All costs are covered via fundraising, and the work is completed each year just before Thanksgiving.
