Former CubeSmart Self-Storage Employee Arrested for Burglarizing the Facility Where He Worked

Michael Warren, a former employee of a Joliet, Ill., CubeSmart self-storage facility, faces burglary charges after admitting to police that he broke into the property’s main office on June 2. Authorities were called to the property at 305 South Larkin Ave. after staff found a hole in the lobby door and discovered that security video of the front gate had been deleted. A facility manager led police to Warren, sharing that she had video of the suspect committing a previous theft at the property, according to the source.

When two officers arrived at Warren’s residence, he was sleeping, but the suspect’s father let them in. Upon entering Warren’s room, they observed an open backpack with a CubeSmart logo. It contained a blue digital camera along with a ski mask, gloves and black hat that were covered in sawdust, according to court documents.

Warren admitted to police that he’d previously taken money from the self-storage business and had broken into the facility the previous night to take items he thought he could sell. He wanted money to buy a car, the documents stated. He also admitted to sawing a hole into the lobby door and taking the digital camera from the office.

Police seized a 1995 Acura Integra belonging to Warren that they believe was used in the burglary. A court hearing regarding the forfeiture of the vehicle is set for Sept. 11. No court date regarding Warren’s arraignment was reported.
