Tornado Strikes Escanaba, MI, Self-Storage Facility
September 2, 2020
A self-storage facility in Escanaba, Mich., suffered damage after being struck by a tornado Monday evening. Part of one structure at Pine Ridge Storage, on the north side of 4182 U.S. Route 2, was destroyed by the cyclone that touched down at 5:28 p.m. Building components and contents from several units were strewn about the property, along the adjacent road and train tracks, and even in the surrounding woodlands, according to a source.
A business on the south side of the highway was also affected. In addition, several power lines were knocked down, leaving the area without electricity.
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula endured rain most of the day but wasn’t under a tornado warning because the weather wasn’t considered a classic “tornado setup.” The event likely only lasted a few minutes. It might have been a quick, spinning column of air called a hybrid cold-air funnel that gains enough strength to touch the ground, a source reported.
The owners of Pine Ridge also own Cloverland Storage in Rapid River, Mich. Both facilities offer 24-hour access, drive-up units, and online reservations and billpay.
