A police officer responding to a call on Monday evening crashed into a U-Haul self-storage facility in Miami. Surveillance video from the adjacent Shell gas station shows four police cars with flashing lights heading east on N.W. 54th St. at 9:30 p.m. A fifth police car loses control and veers off the road, crashing through bushes and into the wall of U-Haul Moving and Storage of Dade County at 5341 N.W. 7th Ave., according to news reports.

“We understand that the police officer was possibly responding to a call when she tried to avoid another vehicle and eventually crashed into the side of the building. She was able to get out of her car,” said Miami Fire Rescue Captain Ignatius Carroll. “The car is about three-fourths of the way inside the building. She was able to open the door, and she was actually inside the building.”

Several witnesses from the gas station rushed to the officer’s aid and attempted to pull the car from the structure or break its windows. Police officers and fire and rescue soon responded.

The officer was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital with minor leg injuries, a source reported. The car was extracted shortly after the accident and repairs to the building are underway. The crash is under investigation.

Established in 1945 and based in Phoenix, U-Haul International Inc. owns more than 32 million square feet of storage space in more than 1,500 self-storage facilities across North America.
