A facility manager at the Apublix Self Storage facility on Sooner Road in Oklahoma City had his wallet stolen last month while on the phone with a customer. Gary Montgomery, a retired staff sergeant who served 32 years in the Army, had his wallet out when a man entered the office and asked to use the restroom. When Montgomery told the man he would help him momentarily, the stranger walked toward the bathroom before silently moving behind the desk and taking the wallet without Montgomery realizing it was gone, according to a source.
Montgomery is disabled and doesn’t hear well, he told a source. "I was going to pay my son-in-law's electric bill for him, and when I went to do that, my billfold was gone," he said.
By the time Montgomery called police and his bank, someone had already used one of his credit cards to purchase $220 in gift cards at a nearby Walmart.
Surveillance video shows the man arriving at the self-storage facility, tiptoeing behind the manager’s desk and grabbing the wallet. The suspect then returned to the bathroom briefly before leaving, a source reported.
Montgomery’s wallet also contained photos of his family, along with civilian, military, Social Security and VA identification.
“Disappointed in my fellow man,” Montgomery said.
Anyone with knowledge about the incident is encouraged to call OKC Crime Stoppers at 405.234.7300.
