Man Arrested Following 6-Hour Standoff at Hilo, HI, Self-Storage Facility

Police arrested a man on Tuesday after a six-hour standoff at StorQuest Self Storage in Hilo, Hawaii. A second suspect who was found at the facility in a stolen vehicle was also taken into custody, according to sources.

Officers arrived at 159 Kalanikoa St. around 5 p.m. after receiving information that a suspect allegedly involved in a series of violent offenses was hiding at the property. Jason Leroy Kime, 36, of Hilo, had two outstanding arrest warrants stemming from a burglary and home-invasion robbery last month.

When officers attempted to contact Kime, he verbally threatened them, then barricaded himself inside a storage unit he rented. Police evacuated the property and closed off Kalanikoa Street between Kuawa and Piʻilani Streets, the sources reported.

During the standoff, Kime breached the drywall barrier between the unit he was in and the next, then another. Officers entered the facility around 11:30 p.m. after negotiations failed. Kime was then taken into custody.

Investigators believe Kime, who’s from Oahu, had been in Hilo for about two weeks. He’s a suspect in an April 20 home-invasion robbery in which a 72-year-old woman was injured, and a residential burglary and vehicle theft that occurred the next day.

A female acquaintance of Kime, 30-year-old Hilo resident Luwika Hauanio, was arrested after ramming a police vehicle at the storage facility. No one was injured. She’s also a suspect in the April 21 burglary and vehicle theft.

Both suspects remain in custody. Additional charges are pending.
