Entrepreneurs Christie and Vance Evans have opened an amenity-rich property in Lexington, Ky., offering self-storage, event space, meeting rooms, private offices and a co-working area, all designed to cater to business tenants. The Urban Squirrel, converted from a 98,000-square-foot warehouse, is the married couple’s first foray into the storage industry.

The 302-unit facility sit on 8 acres at 203 Lisle Industrial Ave., less than two miles from Downtown Lexington and the University of Kentucky. The 1950s structure was an empty shell when the Evans acquired the property last August. About half the former warehouse is dedicated to standard self-storage units. The property also includes four 600-square-foot drive-up units intended for contractors and two 15,000-square-foot warehouse spaces, according to the company website.

The office and meeting space includes WiFi, a breakroom, a copier, counter space and a lounge. With a background in interior design, Christie Evans sketched out the various areas. She also has seven years of experience in self-storage, and will serve as the day-to-day facility manager.

Vance Evans is also part owner of Longwood Antique Woods LLC, which provided reclaimed wood from Kentucky barns to use in the storage facility’s public spaces. Much of the furniture, including a desk, and coffee and meeting tables, were made by Longwood, the source reported.

With their business less than a mile from the Lexington Distillery District, the Evans intend to lease 9,000 square feet of their property as a bourbon distillery, brewery or restaurant. “I’ve already done plans and drawings for them, if someone is thinking of opening a distillery,” Christie Evans told the source. “If anybody were wanting to do something here, I think Lexington would work with us on zoning. They’re wanting to see places like this come alive instead of sitting abandoned like this one was for a couple of years.”
