Grand River Mini-Storage Expands in Howell, MI

Grand River Mini-Storage in Howell, Mich., is expanding this spring, displacing two businesses that currently lease two buildings on its property. The owners plan to add a three-story, climate-controlled building containing 150 units at 2440 W. Grand River Ave. Construction will begin soon and is expected to be complete in the fall, according to the source.

Site renovations include relocating the self-storage management office to the building that’s currently occupied by party-supply store On the Go. The structure behind it, which houses Auto One Glass & Accessories, is the one that will be converted to storage, said facility manager Julie Dye. Grand River already offers 550 units, about 100 of which are climate-controlled. “Our climate-controlled building is now full, so there is definitely a need in the community for that, and we’re just trying to meet that,” she said.

Sandeep Ghelani, owner of On the Go, and James Ron Overbeck, co-owner of Auto One, were informed of the upcoming project via a letter, Overbeck said. The two have since joined forces to construct a new 7,100-square-foot building across the street. “We're moving the business because they have other plans, and we wanted to stay close to where we are,” Overbeck said. Ghelani and Overbeck are working to secure a temporary location to keep the companies open until the new site is complete.

Grand River is owned by a British Columbia, Canada-based developer. It offers 24-hour access, drive-up units, and a retail store that sells moving and packing supplies.
