Universal Insurance Programs, a provider of specialty insurance for self-storage and other industries, has announced a change in leadership to be effective May 1. Jenny Bortman will serve as the new CEO and president, while her mother, Randy Tipton, will become chairman of the board.

Bortman joined Universal as vice president in 2008 and started serving as chief operating officer last year. In these positions, she’s been responsible for overseeing operations including customer service, sales and business development. During her time in the industry, she’s demonstrated effective leadership and innovative thinking, bolstering Universal’s growth even in times of uncertainty, according to a press release.

“Jenny was bred for this,” Tipton said. “She knows this business inside and out. My daughter embodies everything we stand for at Universal Insurance—collaboration, accountability, enthusiasm and relentless loyalty. She has forged incredibly strong relationships with our partners over the past 15-plus years. I have every confidence in her.”

In her new role, Bortman will make improvements that allow the company to grow and be more efficient, the release stated. She aims to bring a renewed focus on systems and technology, streamlining processes to create a better experience for clients, brokers, carriers and team members.

“The success of this company and the people we support are of the utmost importance to me,” Bortman said. “As president, I’ll do everything I can to build on the legacy my mom has created. We’re not a small business anymore, and the time is right for me to bring new ideas and a fresh approach to our company’s next phase. It’s an honor to take on this role, and I’m looking forward to executing an exciting strategy for continued growth and innovation.”

From 2005 to 2007, Bortman was a sales representative in the Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets & Supplements division, where she worked with veterinarians to help treat animals with nutritional issues such as heart disease and diabetes.

Founded in 1992 and based in Arizona, Universal provides comprehensive insurance coverage to business professionals across the United States. It offers specialized programs for the self-storage, tanning, salon and day-spa industries.
