Self-storage operator SpareBox Storage and its recently launched affiliate SpareBox Technologies announced three staff appointments. Jackson Stevens, who was the director of operations for SpareBox Storage for three years, has been named CEO of SpareBox Technologies. Matt Rundall, another SpareBox Storage alumnus, will be chief technology officer of the new venture. In addition, Alex Zhou was hired as vice president of revenue management and marketing for the self-storage operation, according to press releases.

“Jackson and Matt's joint efforts and creative vision have been essential to [our] growth. As founding employees of SpareBox Storage, they both played an integral role in enabling us to scale from zero to 108 properties in just 18 months,” said SpareBox Storage CEO Kate Matheny. “I'm glad they will be able to leverage these skills in their new roles to provide self-storage solutions nationwide, and I truly can't wait to see what they accomplish at SpareBox Technologies.”

“It is a privilege to embark on this new chapter with SpareBox Technologies and to have the opportunity to continue to build upon the strong foundation we established at SpareBox Storage,” Stevens said. “It's time to bring the self-storage industry into the future, and I know that SpareBox Technologies will have a prominent role in doing so.”

Zhou previously served as vice president of revenue management and data science for Simply Self Storage, which operates more than 130 facilities nationwide. In his new role, he’s responsible for maximizing facility revenue and analyzing opportunities as SpareBox continues to expand, a release stated.

“I’m honored that SpareBox selected Real8 to partner with them on this search. It’s a privilege to play a part in building their team and helping them grow,” said Lisa Pyle, cofounder of Real8 Group, the national real estate and self-storage executive-search firm that recruited Zhou.

Founded in August 2020, SpareBox Storage is a joint venture between investment funds advised and sponsored by Davidson Kempner Capital Management LP and Rizk Ventures. Its portfolio of more than 100 facilities is in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas.

SpareBox Technologies was launched earlier this month. It’s a wholly owned subsidiary of Rizk Ventures, which was founded by Thomas Rizk in 2013. The company owns more than 26 million square feet of real estate across 314 properties in the healthcare, light industrial, self-storage and suburban-office sectors. Its LaunchTech vertical has established platforms with artificial intelligence to address operational challenges in real estate, healthcare, supply chain and transportation.
