Carbondale Arts (CA), a Carbondale, Colorado, based art gallery that seeks to build community through exhibits and events, is seeking artists to create five murals and three sculptures for the Carbondale Creative District public art installation in front of Central Self Storage, which is under development in Carbondale, Colorado. The facility along Colorado State Highway 133 is being designed by Land + Shelter Architecture and Planning. The 590-unit building was approved in 2020 after the developers agreed to fund the art installations and contribute to their upkeep.

The murals will be 9 feet tall by 30 to 60 feet wide. The sculptures will be up to 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide and deep. The projects are expected to be complete in May.

“Carbondale has long been a testament to the role of the arts in a community,” said Michael Stout, community engagement director for CA. “Our work is to provide continued support to ensure that artists have opportunities to share their work and continue to shape the culture and landscape of our community.”

A committee consisting of community members and representatives of the self-storage facility will select the artists. Muralists can receive up to $6,000 for their work and sculptors up to $7,500. The spots are open to individual artists or teams, though all applicants must be at least 18 years old. Requests should be submitted on the CA website by Jan. 22.

CA was established in 1971 to promote art, artists, education, cultural activities and events. It has been instrumental in establishing the city of Carbondale as a arts and culture hot spot in the Rockies, according to its website.
