Article-New A Storage Place Self-Storage Facility Planned for Newberg, OR

A Storage Place, which operates 16 self-storage facilities in Arizona, California and Oregon, received approval last week to build a new location in Newberg, Ore. The two-story, 208-unit facility will be built on a vacant lot near the corner of East Hancock Street and Elliott Road. It will be across from Parr Lumber Co. Inc. and south of Elliott Road Self Storage. A Storage Place also operates a 345-unit storage facility nearby at 2811 Portland Road.

The storage operator requested an exception to the city’s zoning code in regard to parking, which calls for 54 spaces. A request was made to reduce this to seven spaces, with 15 other spots available on the side of the driveway, around the building, according to the source. The operator noted the maximum traffic count at its other properties is about 18 vehicles per day, and there are rarely more than five vehicles onsite at once.

Because the application is considered “Type 2,” it only needs approval from the city’s community-development department. If appealed, it would then go before the planning commission. Community-development director Doug Rux approved the application with several conditions, including the lowering of the parking requirement.

Rux noted there’s been an increase in storage development in the city. A Northwest Self Storage facility opened at 23830 N.E. Dunberg Loop this summer, the source reported.

Founded more than 20 years ago, A Storage Place operates two facilities in Arizona, seven in California and seven in Oregon.
