Staff from the corporate office of Moove In Self Storage, which operates 55 facilities across six states, participated in the Sept. 23 “Adopt A Highway” cleanup alongside Greenbriar Road in York, Pennsylvania. The operator adopted a section in 2019 that begins where Greenbriar intersects with Canal Road, at one of the company’s locations, and ends at Cousler Park. Employees first began their cleanup duties in May 2021, according to a press release.

The program is run through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, which provides safety vests, trash bags and work gloves for volunteers, and then picks up the bagged litter from the roadside. Moove In CEO John Gilliland, who grew up on a dairy farm, chose to participate because he often found rubbish on his family’s property and understands the impact of littering. “Every spring, once the fields were plowed, we would walk along the edge of the property and collect bags upon bags of trash,” he said.

Gilliland also appreciates that the program provides an opportunity for employees work together and give back to the community. “It gives all of us a sense of doing something good as a team, which contributes to our positive company culture and bolsters our strong company values,” he said, adding that the company will continue participating for the foreseeable future.

Founded in 1998, Moove In operates facilities in Connecticut, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Managed by the Investment Real Estate Group of Companies, it’s a participating regional operator of real estate investment trust National Storage Affiliates Trust, which has a self-storage portfolio of 68.4 million rentable square feet across 42 states and Puerto Rico.
