Sandia Park Self Storage in Sandia Park, N.M., was one of four organizations to receive a “Business Energy Efficiency Star” award last week from Public Service Co. of New Mexico (PNM). The operator converted its exterior metal-halide lights to LED lighting last spring, according to its Facebook page.

The honorees received a plaque during the Oct. 6 East Mountain Chamber of Commerce meeting. Their combined efforts have resulted in a savings of 118,632 kilowatts of electricity annually, according to the source.

Additional winners were Triangle Grocery of Cedar Crest, N.M., which won the top award in the large-business category, and Brewer Oil Co., which placed in the small-business category for making the switch to more energy-efficient light fixtures. PNM also awarded Bernalillo County, N.M., for installing energy-efficient lighting at some of its fire stations.

“Helping business customers save money by becoming energy-wise is an important part of what we do,” said Amy Miller, director of PNM’s environmental, local government and community affairs.

Opened 10 years ago, Sandia Park Self Storage is a half mile north of State Highway 14. Serving the communities of Cedar Crest, Edgewood, Sandia Park and Tijeras, the property is open 24 hours a day and sells moving and packing supplies.
