The Anacortes, Washington, City Council has voted to remove self-storage as a permitted use in the city’s commercial-use zones, which are designated for general-service, retail-commercial and mixed uses. Officials made the move due to a lack of building-size limits for self-storage use, according to the source.

“A 200,000-square-foot building could be constructed as self-service storage,” said Don Measamer, director of planning, community and economic development.

Self-storage businesses currently operating within commercial-use zones will be allowed to continue but prohibited from expanding, the source reported. Self-storage will continue to be permitted in the city’s commercial-marine and light-manufacturing zones.
