Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed a pair of identical companion bills on March 22 that will allow self-storage operators in the state to have stored watercraft towed if tenants are in default for more than 60 days. House Bill 1930 and Senate Bill 976 were supported by the national Self Storage Association (SSA). They’ll go into effect on July 1, according to a March 27 email newsletter to SSA members.

Under the measure, storage operators will be able to tow watercraft in lieu of conducting a public sale of the property. Notification of towing must be sent to delinquent tenants at least 10 days prior to the tow date via verified mail or email.

HB 1930 passed the house on Feb. 21, with a 99-0 vote, while SB 976 passed the senate 36-0 on Jan. 17, with two abstentions.
