From the 2023 ISS World Expo: Mason Shaw on Embracing Self-Storage Automation, With Firsthand Advice

Many self-storage owners have adopted automation as a way to improve efficiency and relieve operational pain points, but many more are still on the fence about whether to proceed. In this interview recorded at the 2023 Inside Self-Storage World Expo, facility operator Mason Shaw discusses why she pushed her family’s business to embrace technological advancements. She gives insight to how they pivoted, the types of tools that can be implemented today, and steps others can take in preparation of “the plunge.”

Shaw is director of operations for Carolinas-based American Storage South, where she helped lead the shift from a traditional, manned operation to an automated model. She’s used her facilities in the Charlotte, North Carolina, area as test beds for innovative technology, creating a customer experience that works in favor of both tenant and business. She used the experience to help launch KISS Solutions, a software company that specializes in self-storage operational efficiency.
