This week I attended the Arizona Self Storage Association Conference and Tradeshow in Fort McDowell, a suburb of Phoenix. The event was held at the We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort, an elegant and inviting space nestled among the mountains. It’s a wonderful setting for the annual show, which draws people from all over Arizona.

One of the aspects I love the most about these smaller conferences is the intimacy. The hustle and bustle of bigger events is exhilarating but can also be overwhelming at times. Local ones like this provide ample opportunity to spend more time with fellow storage professionals and really get to know them. And making these connections is beneficial on so many levels. You never know who you might meet or what it could lead to professionally. I highly encourage you attend state or regional industry shows whenever you can. Here’s why.

Education. These conferences might have smaller educational platforms than the Inside Self-Storage World Expo but often what they offer is localized. One session yesterday focused on what’s happening in self-storage development in Arizona. So, if you’re in this state, the info was golden. Another touched on legal challenges and solutions for local operators. There was also insight for investors including a local market overview. When the information is related to what’s happening in your own backyard, it’s often more powerful and useful.

Networking. Every industry event offers ample opportunities to meet new people, but state and regional shows provide a different environment for it. You could connect with someone who might become your next employer or employee, investor, mentor, or new supplier. A conversation with one person could lead to an introduction to someone else who’ll help you strengthen your professional network. You might uncover new partnerships or other kinds of collaborations.

Products and services. You can peruse them online, of course, but there’s nothing better than getting face to face with someone who can tell you about their products and services as well as answer your specific questions. They’re the experts and they want to get to know you. Plus, you can find out what’s new and exciting in the self-storage industry.

New ideas. When you gather with others, you’ll be exposed to new ideas. Some might even be a game-changer for you or your business. Attending a state conference allows you to step away from the day-to-day and gain a fresh perspective. It’s also an excellent avenue to become inspired or motivated.

Nearly every state self-storage association offers fantastic educational events. Many host webinars, luncheons and other networking opportunities. To find one in your area, bookmark the online ISS Calendar for links to conferences, expos and other happenings. Becoming more involved with your state association can only lead to better things for you and your self-storage business.
