Cape Coral, FL, Considers Ban on New Self-Storage Development Along Pine Island Road

City officials in Cape Coral, Fla., are considering an ordinance that would ban new self-storage development on Pine Island Road, a 9.4-mile stretch of State Road 78. The area has seen an explosion of new development in the past two years. The street has six existing storage facilities, according to the source.

Planning and zoning commission members met on Wednesday to discuss the ordinance, which is supported by resident Cindy Kent. “I think it's a great thing, and I wish they would stop building [self-storage facilities], period, in Cape Coral. I think it brings down the value of your homes,” she said.

Storage facilities can be built on narrow sites and don’t require visibility, according to city officials, and at least one resident agreed. “Of course, there is a huge need for storage, but it should not be on the main road; it should be on the back," said Shahid Imran.

Kent hopes a ban on storage would lead to more shopping centers. “As the population gets bigger, we have nowhere to shop. I mean, we go over the bridge most of the time,” she said.
