Extra Space Paints Over Cloud Mural at San Francisco Self-Storage Facility

Extra Space Storage Inc., a publicly traded self-storage real estate investment trust and third-party management firm, is painting over a mural at one of its San Francisco facilities that has been visible to freeway motorists since 1998. Painted by artists Peter Collins and Gary Graham, the mural depicts white clouds against a blue sky. The wall will be painted gray and green to fit in with the company’s color scheme. Extra Space took control of the facility when it acquired SmartStop Self Storage Inc. last year.

An employee at the facility, identified by the source only as Amalia, said the decision to paint over the mural was business-related and “not because of the health of the building.” The mural is visible to motorists who take the Octavia exit off the 101 freeway.

The property includes 1,120 storage units in seven stories and a basement. The structure was converted to self-storage in 2000.

Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Extra Space owns or operates 1,412 self-storage properties in 37 states; Washington, D.C.; and Puerto Rico. The company’s properties comprise approximately 945,000 units and 106 million square feet of rentable space.
