Officials in Troy, Ohio, have imposed a 180-day moratorium on new applications for self-storage developments to give city staff time to evaluate and recommend land-use regulations for the business use. The ban went into immediate effect on Feb. 6, after the ordinance was approved by the city council.

The vote came after the community and economic-development committee, the mayor, council members, and other city officials and residents met on Jan. 23 to discuss a request to halt new self-storage applications. Warehousing and other storage uses are permitted in the city’s planned-office/industrial, light-industrial, general-industrial and highway-service business districts, but there’s concern about the “prospect of additional storage facilities within vacant areas,” according to city documentation.

There are two self-storage applications currently on file with the city. Neither will be affected by the moratorium, according to a city staff report.

In preparing a report on recommendations, city staff will research ordinances and use regulations in other Ohio communities, the report said.
