Self-Storage Building Planned for Dilapidated Motel Site in Colonie, NY

A self-storage facility may soon replace a rundown motel in Colonie, N.Y. Property owner Alex Patel was ordered by the town to submit plans for the dilapidated Skylane Motel property by March 4 or face $750,000 in fines. The site is already zoned for self-storage, and Patel has presented the necessary applications and fees for the project.

Patel’s proposal for the nearly 1-acre site includes tearing down the existing structure and building 42,000 square feet of storage space. “We did the curser review last night, [and we’re] sending it out to all town departments today,” Joe LaCivita, director of planning and development, told the source.

Once the plans are approved, the building will be demolished. “Things are moving along again in the right direction, and we’re very happy about that,” said Colonie Town Supervisor Paula Mahan.

Both the Skylane and another of Patel’s properties, the Blu-Bell Motel, were shut down in 2014 after he was cited for a series code violations that included cracked windows, a lack of running water, exposed wires and mold. Officials claimed Patel was earning revenue from the county by housing displaced families, homeless individuals and sex offenders, a source reported. The Blu-Bell was demolished last fall.

Comments from community members regarding the storage proposal are due by March 17, the source reported. The building would need to be demolished within 21 days following this deadline.
