The Rockdale County, Georgia, Board of Commissioners has just approved a 120-day development moratorium on several business types, including self-storage. The Jan. 28 resolution also halts the acceptance, review and issuance of all new permits or approvals for gas stations, vape shops and discount retailers that sell goods for $10 or less, according to the source.
The county is updating its unified development ordinance (UDO), its first review in 10 years, to better align with its comprehensive development plan and achieve balance of different business types. The moratorium will expire on May 1 unless county officials adopt a UDO amendment or update the Rockdale County Code of Ordinance.
The measure comes after nearby DeKalb County released an evaluation highlighting the negative effects of these kinds of businesses on the community. Study findings showed some retail types led to higher crime and decreased property values. Rockdale County officials aim to limit these developments based upon the study, the source reported.
