The Somerset Township, Mich., Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Jan. 12 to discuss a zoning amendment that would specifically allow self-storage. Under the plan, self-storage would be designated as a light-industrial use. The town doesn’t currently have a definition for the business use, according to the source.

The need for an amendment arose when Somerset Self Storage LLC submitted a site-plan permit for an expansion of its 1465 E. Chicago Road location. Confusion about how to approach the request initially led officials to request the business owners submit the plan through a warehouse designation to meet parking requirements, but the town attorney rejected the submission, noting the site plan would be in violation of the zoning ordinance, the source reported.

The planning commission then opted to have the attorney write language to designate self-storage under a light-industrial district. “That’s how we are going to handle it,” Deb Spice, town clerk, told the source. “The [self-storage owners] were at the meeting, they were very pleased with what we came up with, and their attorney was happy with what we are doing.”

The commission reviewed the draft for the zoning amendment during its Nov. 10 meeting.
