Officials in Cape Coral, Florida, are considering a rezoning map that would encourage commercial development along the Burnt Store Road corridor, north of Van Buren Parkway, but exclude some business uses including car washes and self-storage facilities. The planning and zoning committee recently recommended the zoning change to the city council. Planners view the arterial road as a gateway to the city, according to the source.

During a recent meeting, some residents singled out car-wash and self-storage businesses as being too prevalent throughout the municipality. “A lot more car washes are being built. They are popping up everywhere, like wild mushrooms, and also storage facilities,” said Elva-Helene Leonetti.

Other considerations for Burnt Store Road is upgraded landscaping for beautification, the source reported.

The city council must approve the ordinance, though it isn’t expected to make a final decision until mid-2023.
