UK Self-Storage Operator Storage Giant Announces Aggressive Expansion Plans

Update 10/14/19 – Storage Giant will complete three of its expansion projects by the end of the year, according to a recent source. The company will open a second phase at its facilities in Cannock and Telford, England, and a third phase that’ll add 10,000 square feet to its Swansea, Wales, location.

“The expansion of the Swansea site is being carried out, in part, to accommodate the growing influx of student numbers in the city. More than 5 percent of Storage Giant’s turnover during the summer months now comes from the student market in Swansea,” Williams said. “In addition, Storage Giant is looking for a second freehold building or site near Swansea [that] can be developed with state-of-the-art storage facilities to meet further demand.”

A mixed-use project in Bristol, England, is almost complete as well, and the company plans to expand its facility in Newport, Wales, next year.

“Storage Giant is going through a very exciting period of growth, mostly through development of its own stores, but also sometimes via carefully selected acquisitions,” Williams said. “We have acquired various self-storage businesses over the last few years, but we prefer to develop our own stores, as we learn so much from each one [that] we develop.”

5/6/19 – Storage Giant Ltd., which operates nine self-storage facilities in the United Kingdom, plans to double its number of locations by 2020 as part of an aggressive expansion plan. The company will add 11 new locations in the U.K., as well as 47,770 square feet of storage to its existing properties, according to the source.

In addition to traditional self-storage, the company also provides office space for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). It added 188 businesses clients within the past year. “We have seen more than 900 SMEs flourish under the Storage Giant roof in Wales alone, everything from charities to tech startups and fashion brands have set up their operations within Storage Giant facilities since we offer flexible space for both office and storage along with attractive terms,” said company founder Simon Williams. “So, we see small businesses thrive with the right support. It is notable, too, that smart use of technology has redrawn the landscape for startups, many of whom are now able to operate successfully from a single, well-designed unit.”

Storage Giant is the fifth largest self-storage company and second largest private self-storage firm in the U.K., Williams said. Founded in 2007 and based in Newport, Wales, it operates four self-storage facilities in England and five in Wales.
