Canal Road Self Storage in Brunswick, GA, Considers Land Swap With County

The owners of Canal Road Self Storage in Brunswick, Ga., last week discussed a possible land swap with officials of Glynn County. The property at 700 Canal Road is owned by Spark Four LLC and 82 LLC.

The storage owners have offered the county a strip of land they own along Canal Road in exchange for another parcel at the back of the storage property, which abuts the Brunswick-Altamaha Canal and isn’t accessible by road. The Glynn County Commission is considering the swap to widen Canal Road from two lanes to four, starting at Glynco Parkway and ending at the Canal Crossing Shopping Center, which is under construction.

The county will need to acquire more land to complete the project, said Richard Strickland, commission chairman. “We need the land, just like we’re going to need other land along Canal Road,” Strickland said. “If we can do that without costing the taxpayers money, then we’ll absolutely consider it. The timing is right, if we can, to try to acquire this frontage property.”

The county originally planned to purchase the land from the storage facility, according to commissioner Mark Stambaugh.

The project is one of several that would be funded by the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, a 1 percent sales tax that would need to be approved by county voters. The tax will also cover the cost of expanding Glynco Parkway to four lanes from its intersection with Canal Road to U.S. Highway 17, the source reported.

Opened in 2007, Canal Road Self Storage is owned and operated by Mark Bearden. The facility offers 24-hour access, a retail store that sells moving and packing supplies, and vehicle storage.
