Smart self-storage operators ban hazardous materials from being stored inside their units such as gasoline, oil, cleaning solvents and other highly flammable items. A new potential threat causing concern within the industry is lithium-ion batteries, which tenants sometimes store in their units and can catch fire when they overheat. In fact, a facility in Byfleet, England, was destroyed by a battery-triggered fire in May. Unfortunately, these batteries are widely used in various electronics, from electric bikes and medical devices to phones and even toys.
