Self-storage owners have a lot riding on the success of business. After all, it’s their investment and vision on the line, plus they may have to answer to other stakeholders. So, it’s understandable that they might be tempted to get involved in every little operational decision. That doesn’t mean it’s always necessary or even productive. In this video recorded at the 2022 Inside Self-Storage World Expo, Gary Edmonds discusses what it really means to be a hands-on owner in 2022. He offers advice on how to lead the business without getting bogged down in the minutiae as well as areas in which owners should take a keen interest—or a back seat.

Edmonds is owner of Pike Co. Storage. He purchased his first self-storage facility in 2001 and has since added 14 locations. He also launched The Storage Manager, a third-party management company that specializes in remote and unmanned operations. As a retired insurance agent, he has expertise in the value of training and leveraging team members to provide the best return.
