Onity Launches Electronic Locking Solution for the Self-Storage Industry

Update 3/30/23 – Onity has integrated Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity from technology firm MachineQ with its Passport smart locks. The collaboration will allow self-storage operators to lock, unlock and monitor unit status remotely. It will also give them greater visibility into facility operations, providing real-time and periodic reporting on sensor events, such as open/close status, as well as the ability to identify and respond to issues, according to a press release.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with MachineQ to provide a comprehensive solution for self-storage facility operators,” Sbaihat said. “Our smart locks, combined with MachineQ’s IoT connectivity platform, will provide operators with visibility into their units, enhancing the tenant experience, building customer loyalty and improving overall facility management.”

A subsidiary of Comcast Co., MachineQ specializes in IoT solutions. Its platform can be scaled to other areas of a self-storage facility as well as provide enhanced unit monitoring for leak detection, temperature fluctuations and more, the release stated.

Onity also announced it had signed national reseller agreements with self-storage building supplier Trachte Building Systems and its Trac-Rite door division. The contracts allow the organizations to integrate with the Passport solution as part of their product offerings, according to a press release.

Founded in 1901 and based in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Trachte is an employee-owned company that manufactures metal prefabricated buildings and components for self-storage, fire-training towers and tactical-training facilities. Its customized self-storage systems include single- and multi-story, portable storage, interior partition and corridor, and canopy boat/RV.

3/15/23 – Onity, a provider of electronic-access products and mobile credentials for self-storage and other industries, has launched Passport Locking Solution, which includes a smart lock, mobile app, cloud-based management system, Internet of Things network, and connections to other approved devices. The new product will be featured in the company’s booth at the Inside Self-Storage World Expo in Las Vegas, April 11-14, according to a press release.

“Onity is excited to expand its leading-edge, mobile-credentialing technology, which has opened doors over 250 million times since 2015, and electronic-lock expertise into the self-storage segment,” said company president Fayyad Sbaihat. “Thoughtfully designed to meet the needs of self-storage facilities and tenants, the Passport Locking Solution offers a compact lock combined with our leading-edge DirectKey technology and cloud-based system to deliver a secure and reliable ecosystem.”

Passport can be retrofitted to most existing unit doors. It allows facility operators to grant and revoke access to self-storage units, monitor activity, and virtually oversee facility operation. Users can also receive real-time and periodic notifications for actionable insights, the release stated.

Self-storage tenants can open their units using the Passport mobile app, eliminating the need for physical locks that require keys or code combinations. They can also grant or revoke access to friends, family or business associates.
