At the end of last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Greater Northeastern Conference and Trade Show, sponsored by the Massachusetts Self Storage Association. Despite the higher than normal autumn temperatures, the winds were blowing and a torrential downpour set the scene for a dull, gloomy day. Nevertheless, inside the Sheraton Hotel in Milford, Mass., the energy levels predicted differently: It would be a brilliant day for self-storage. 
 
This became obvious to me the moment I walked into the expo hall. There was an air of quaintness and camaraderie instantly. Conversations come easy and smiles were forthcoming. Not a bad place to be at all. 
 
Self-storage folk are nothing if theyre not hospitable. Anyone whos made a name in this industry and continues to play an active role in convention circles is sure to show the self-storage spark of hospitality. People with self-storage longevity are approachable. They engage in conversation easily, swiftly sharing insights and lessons, laughing at mistakes made along the way. 
 
A perfect example: Jeffrey Greenberger (whos our self-storage legal guru) stopped by the booth to say hi and catch up. After we chatted for awhile, Jeff politely suggested he should make his way around the room. Before he could even move 2 feet from my booth, he was approached countless times by owners/operators/managers, who all addressed him similarly: I just have one question that Im hoping you can answer. 
 
Jeff never hesitated to provide information with each and every legal concern presented him. During a short break, I asked Jeff if it bothered him that he couldnt get across the room without having someone ask him for legal counsel. Thats what Im here for, Jeff said without skipping a beat, ready to help whoever headed in his direction. 
 
There may be competition breathing in all parts of the country for self-storage development and operation, but at conventions, were all on an even playing fielda friendly playing field. In fact, its more like a picnic, potluck style, with everyone bringing their favorite dishes to pass around. 
 
For the vendors and owners/operators alike, we share in the business of caringcaring for tenants belongings and well beings. Its work, but its the good kind of work, the kind where we can help others and cherish the rewards of doing so. 
 
Check out your local associations and see if you cant squeeze in a trip to an upcoming self-storage convention to mingle with those with a similar mindset as yours. People who care about their business, which cares about people. Better still, maybe you can book yourself for the granddaddy of all self-storage events: ISS Vegas Expo, Feb. 5-8, 2008.
