Three Halloween jack-o-lanterns and other fall-themed decorations

Imagine walking into a self-storage office draped in cobwebs, with skeletons hanging in the corners and the smell of pumpkin spice in the air, creating a whimsical yet spooky atmosphere. This isn’t just a place to store stuff, it’s a Halloween happening that transforms an ordinary visit into a memorable experience.

As the season unfolds, many operators are embracing the holiday spirit, decking out their space with a festive flair. And here’s a treat for you: That jack-o-lantern sitting on your counter might just be a pot of gold for your business. According to the “Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services,” cheerful decorations in a retail space can significantly increase sales by creating ambiance and a positive customer experience, making people more likely to spend money. A grim-reaper statue in your lobby may be a symbol of death, but it could also bring life to your revenue stream!

Spooky decorations can do more than look frightfully good, they can be a fun way to kick off a seasonal marketing campaign and attract foot traffic. If you have an elaborate setup, why not reach out to the local media? They might feature your location on a morning-show segment or in a news story highlighting the must-see displays in town. Who doesn’t slow down when they drive by a home with elaborate decorations in the front yard? The same focus could be directed toward your self-storage facility.

You can also use decorations as a centerpiece to host a community event at your storage facility. Manhattan Mini Storage, which operates 17 locations throughout New York City, has hosted a Halloween party that included trick-or-treating, face-painting, costumed characters, prizes, music and more. After all, consumers love to spend their dollars with businesses that have a strong community connection.

A Profitable Surplus

When I was growing up, most families only decorated for Christmas. These days, people go wild for all kinds of celebrations, including Valentine’s Day, Easter, July 4 and Thanksgiving. In fact, when it comes to Halloween, more than half of all Americans get into the spooky groove, according to a recent survey by Lawn Love. That’s great news for self-storage operators. With the size of some of these elaborate decorations, many homeowners are running out of room in their garages or basements. Once the festivities end, where do all those items go?

My family used to go over the top with holiday decorating, but our attic was way too small to keep everything. My dad dedicated space in the storage unit he rented for his electrical-contracting business to stash this stuff. The pile grew each year after taking advantage of those 50% off sales the stores held the day after a holiday to clear inventory.

Self-storage offers a simple solution for holiday hoarders and businesses alike, making it easy to save decorations until the next event rolls around. In fact, the storage of seasonal items is one of the most common uses for our facilities.

We’re getting deeper into the “ber” months (or “brrrrrrr” depending on your location), and that means the end-of-year observances will soon be upon us. It’s time to bust out the lights and ornaments and get into the holiday mood! As we embrace the festive season, decorating your self-storage facility can serve multiple purposes. Not only does it create an inviting atmosphere for your customers, it fosters a sense of fun. By showcasing your creativity, you can transform your space into a local attraction that connects with your community.
