A hatchet-wielding man in a mental-health crisis was arrested on July 11 after barricading himself in a Tillamook, Ore., self-storage unit. Local police chief Terry Wright was passing Tillamook Mini Storage at 3316 3rd St. at about 7:50 a.m. when he noticed the gate was open. Upon entering the facility, he spotted a man, later identified as Jonathan D. Messare, 40, standing in an open unit. Messare was wearing a combat helmet and building a barricade with metal and other items, according to a source.

Messare, who also had a knife, made statements to police indicating paranoia. He said he feared law enforcement and has Special Operations Forces military experience. Traffic along 3rd Street was temporarily shut down, and people in the area were advised to shelter in place, a source reported.

Negotiators were able to coerce Messare into surrendering at 9:30 a.m. and he was taken into custody. He was then transported to Tillamook Regional Medical Center for a medical evaluation. The case has been referred to the Tillamook County District Attorney's office for review.

Messare was also arrested on March 6 after cutting a Portland police officer with a knife during a scuffle in a baseball field near Hosford Middle School. Messare was brandishing a hatchet, bamboo poles, a knife and dog leash with a metal carabiner attached. While removing his clothes, he yelled expletives and said he’d killed his wife and child, a source reported. Messare then dropped all weapons except a small knife and charged at the officers, who overpowered him. One officer suffered a small cut to his hand.

During booking for the March incident, Messare scratched two officers and stomped on another’s foot. Police claim he was under the influence of an unknown substance at the time. He faces charges of assault in the second degree, assault on a public safety officer, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.

After the arrest, police served a warrant on Messare’s home where they seized an AR-15-style rifle, shotgun, semi-automatic handgun, .38 revolver, ammunition and tactical gear. An additional charge of unlawful possession of a firearm was added to his case. Messare was also charged with four counts of violating a restraining order, a source reported.

Messare has pleaded not guilty to all charges. He posted bail and was released from jail last month.
