John Cooper, a general partner of self-storage private-equity firm HAN Capital, recently purchased a Highland Park, Illinois, mansion owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan for $9.5 million. The 56,000-square-foot property at 2700 Point Lane was listed for more than 12 years, according to sources.

A Chicago resident for more than 10 years, Cooper recalls seeing news of the basketball superstar first listing the house in 2012 for $29 million. “I remember seeing the home for sale and thinking how cool it would be for the person that buys the home,” he said.

Less than a year later, the price dropped to $21 million, then to $16 million in 2013. The 7-acre property was most recently priced at $14.8 million. The listing was updated in September to show it was under contract, sources reported.

Since taking ownership, Cooper has met with contractors to make repairs and upgrades. However, the avid sports fan said he intends to honor the property’s legacy and not make any major changes. The mansion is a popular tourist spot, with visitors posing for a photo at the front gate with Jordan’s 23 jersey number on it.

The custom-designed property features a regulation-sized basketball court, circular infinity pool, putting green, tennis court and cigar room. The house has nine bedrooms, 19 bathrooms and parking for 14 cars. Built in 1995, it was remodeled in 2009.
