Arden-Mills River Self Storage of NC Featured on Local News for Entertaining Sign Quips

Arden-Mills River Self Storage in Mills River, North Carolina, has gained local notoriety for posting humorous messages on its street marquee sign at 5520 Old Haywood Road. The business was recently featured in a local television news segment aired by ABC affiliate WLOS.

The messages tend to be humorous sayings such as, “The first 5 days after the weekend are the hardest,” or a play on words like “Without geometry, life is pointless.” The practice was started by Will Hartzog, son of owners Bob and Lizabeth Hartzog, though he initially didn’t get permission, the source reported.

“A lot of friends would come over, and people would write quotes on the wall. So, I just thought this would be cool to display some of these really funny ones on the sign,” Will said. “It always gets my attention; maybe it’ll get someone else’s attention.”

Though the first message was rearranged into something crude by a vandal, the Hartzogs decided the change from the normal advertising of the facility’s rates and deals was a good one. Today, the messages are suggested and selected as a group, and facility manager Taylor Gibson switches them out about every 10 days.

The sign sayings have become so popular that if passersby think a particular message has been on display for too long, they stop in the office to tell Gibson, according to the source. One motorist even told Lizabeth that his daughter insists they drive by the sign even though it’s out of their way.

Opened in 1987, Arden-Mills River Self Storage offers drive-up and climate-controlled units as well as vehicle storage.
