Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine last week signed House Bill 321 (HB 321) into law, which makes substantial changes to the state’s self-storage lien legislation. It goes into effect on Sept. 15, according to a recent newsletter distributed by the national Self Storage Association (SSA) to its members.
The new law outlines how self-storage facility operators can send lien notices, which can be delivered by Certified or First-Class Mail, or via email if the occupant agrees to such notifications. In addition, it clarifies existing towing provisions for stored vehicles belonging to delinquent tenants and expands them to include trailers. It also addresses the operator’s right to sell low-value vehicles outright, according to the SSA.
The bill was sponsored by house representatives Darrell Kick and Bob Young.
