The governors in Missouri and Pennsylvania recently signed bills to update self-storage legislation in their states. One relates to tenant insurance while the other addresses advertising for lien sales, according to a July 15 email newsletter from the national Self Storage Association (SSA) to its members.
Missouri Governor Mike Parsons approved a bill that increases the maximum coverage of self-storage tenant insurance from $5,000 to $15,000. It goes into effect on Aug. 28.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed House Bill 1818 (HB 1818), which updates advertising stipulations for self-storage lien sales. The current law allows facility operators to advertise once in a print newspaper and once online instead of running two newspaper ads. The new law, which takes effect on Aug. 27, creates a remedy for situations when the newspaper fails to publish the announcement in a timely fashion. In these cases, the online post is considered the most accurate in regard to sale date.
The SSA represents more than 22,000 U.S. and international member-affiliated self-storage facilities, according to its website. It’s allied with several state and international self-storage associations and has about 6,000 members.
